Thy chase had a beast in view.
(John Dryden, The Secular Masque)
Hare today.
Gone tomorrow -
Gone to the dogs.
Dog days?
Hares hoping.
This poem, originally published under the longer title, The
Cup's Waterloo, was written in February 2003, during the holding of
the Waterloo Cup hare-coursing "event" at Altcar, Lancashire. I
sincerely hoped the time of writing that the 2003 Cup would be the last ever held; sadly this seems unlikely to be the case.
